Texas hill country road trip points of interest?
Q. Besides San Antonio, the Alamo and Mission tour, Fredericksburg, Perdenales Falls, climbing Enchanted Rock, having a beer in Luckenbach (Yes I found it, don't make me start singing) and touring the wineries, what else is there to see or do in the hill country?
Asked by kathy059 - Sat Apr 4 23:33:39 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The caves are an interesting tour. They are between San Antonio and San Marcos. Another interesting thing that I have not done myself but plan to do soon is the Safari ride. Where you go with your vehicle and animals are in the wild.

Grow any Passifora Ruby Glow in your yard in the Texas Hill Country?
Q. Have two purchased seedlings would like to grow in yard now in 2.5 inch pots From what I read they need to be potted but I want to put them in my ward garden, has anyone done this successfully Would love to hear how and the specifics

A. I have seven different types of passion flowers. not sure about ruby, but double check on it's limit for winters. Mine have always done the best in the ground, for first couple of weeks water daily to help the shock of transplanting. plant in full sun or else you will get a poor showing for the flowers and if it makes fruit double check that it is edible. some are poisonous while others are a great snack. it just really depends on your type of plant. several of mine make no fruit and the others just make an unviable shell. good luck and let me know if you need any more answers. oh, and the lady i buy from is grassyknowlesexotics.com. on her site she has great tips for upkeep with them.

A. Traffic is not bad in the hill country unless you consider Austin as part of the hill county. Tyler is a fairly small town without too much traffic. The traffic in Houston is worse than in New York City.

What kind of wine - Hill Country Texas?
Q. Hi all - I'm in the Texas Hill Country and I'm having an Italian inspired dinner. Lasagne, Garlic shrimp and Baked Rigatoni on the menu. What is a good red wine? white wine? - that is available around here? Maybe HEB or Western Beverages might carry. I won't actually have many wine drinkers, but I still want to have some available for those who can appreciate. Thanks! First off - I'm not Italian... so I'm doing my best wing it. No offense meant to true Italians. It will be buffet style, so I need dishes that I can do ahead on my own. Appreciate the input for both red & white.

A. Since you are in the Hill Country, I am assuming you are wanting a wine with a little local flavor. Texas vintners do make wines from Italian varietals, but as a rule they are not overly easy to find. If that is the case there, I would recommend you stick with a good red from a reliable producer, such as Becker, Llano, or maybe St. Genevieve. Personally I enjoy the Becker Iconoclast - a full-bodied red that goes well with bbq, I believe it would be a good - although not perfect - match with the entree. For a white I would recommend a Llano Pinot Grigio, although Chenin Blanc or the Riesling may work well, too. Hope this helps.

Does anyone in the Texas Hill Country have a good source for large bags of perlite? (2,3,or4 cubic feet each)?
Q. It amazes me that in a hot and dry climate that would seem to beg for the use of perlite in lawns and golf greens would have perlite in such short supply. At first I thought he just wasn't trying hard enough in his online searches but I looked on my own and even found the wholesale agricultural buyer-and-seller-matching websites disappointing. A. Hi again. If you are wanting for Perlcrete mix, then I believe you can find 4 cu/ft bags of vermiculite at a nursery on Thousand Oaks in N. San Antonio. If this doesn't work, try masonry or horticulture supply stores. If you go the HeatStop route there is a very cheap supplier just south of San Antonio.

A. Hamilton pool is definitely a great place, though sometimes, it can get crowded in the summer. Idk if it's free though. Bull creek is the greatest place to me. It doesn't get too crowded, and it's free. There is a rope swing , small waterfalls, areas to jump off, and there are also a lot of fish in the water which is fun, especially for kids. When you go down the creek a bit it get deeper, where people tube, dive or kayak. There is also a very shallow (ankle deep) area before the waterfalls, with a lot of minos where most people play with their little kids. The devils water hole at Inks Lake is also very fun. basically, it's where people jump and dive off of high rocks, but ot's pretty fun. It's been a while since i went there,… [cont.]

A. There is a lot to see in that area, especially nature-wise. There's Enchanted Rock, Longhorn Caverns, Lake Buchanon, lots of great roads to drive if you have a motorcycle or just plain enjoy driving. This website might help you out: It's a great place to stargaze, if you aren't in one of the towns. I miss the hill country very much, it was beautiful and peaceful there, although most of the towns I'm familiar with are expanding so fast, sadly.

A. I live in the Texas hill country near Dripping Springs. This area encompasses soft, chalky limestone to hard flinty limestone near the Pedernales River. This flinty rock is extremely tough on digging equipment. There is also the Llano uplift which is mainly granite. Limestone ranges in hardness from 2.3 up to 7 for Chert and Flint. Granite varies from 5.5 to 7 with the darker colors tending to have less quartz and be softer. Freeze depth in Central Texas is rarely more than three inches. Most winters the ground does not freeze at all, so pipe does not have to be buried deeply. There are trenching machines that will handle the softer limestones, but where harder rocks predominate it is best to bring in soil for a lawn. Raised beds… [cont.]

What are the advantages/disadvantages to moving to different parts of Texas?
Q. Choices are 1 West Texas such as El Paso or Midland area 2 Central Southern Texas/Hill Country like Austin or San Antonio or Marble Falls or 3 East Texas like Tyler or Longview area. I've already been to all these places and already know the West is very dry and the East more wet.
Asked by tlw - Sun Sep 27 04:53:31 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. West Texas is much flatter, drier and does not have as much vegatation. East Texas has the piny woods, is very humid and has a large amount of vegetation. The hill country is pretty much just like it sounds -- hilly and is otherwise sort of the transition area between east and west texas. All 3 have plenty of rural or city areas in which to live: Midland/Odessa, Lubbock, El Paso out West; Tyler/Longview, Nacogdoches/Lufkin, Beaumont/Pt. Arthur or even Houston in the East. The central area down the I-35 corridor is probably the most metropolitan (outside of Houston) with D/FW, Austin & San Antonio.
