The Edwards Plateau is a region of west-central Texas which is bounded by the Balcones Fault to the south and east, the Llano Uplift and the Llano Estacado to the north, and the Pecos River and Chihuahuan Desert to the west. San Angelo, Austin, San Antonio and Del Rio roughly outline the area.

Why does everyone think Texas is all desert?
Q. When I lived Back East everyone was certain Texas was full of cowboys living on ranches. They envisioned it being the Wild West overwhelmed with sand, cacti, and tumble. First off, tumbleweed is native to Russia, and it was imported here. Second, cows cannot graze in the desert where there isn't enough grass. Why don't people understand that the vast majority of the landscape here is prairie? Hardly anyone lives in the desert out in West Texas. In fact, that area has lost population. Further, many are convinced that we live agrarian lifestyles in rural areas. More than 80 percent of our population resides in urban areas east of I-35 (which traverses the Balcones Escarpment that separates the Gulf Coastal Plain from the Edwards Plateau.) A… [cont.]

A. Exactly. The Media has a large part in this, but I'm really really too hungry to make a long answer right now-plus, a few other people got it covered all ready. So I'll speak as a fellow Texan. I live in Waco, where it's hilly, slightly forested country. To the East, you get tall trees in large forests. To the West, as you said-is almost all prairies with a little desert (where hardly anyone lives anyway). Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio and El Paso are the major population centers, and only El Paso is what anyone would call being "wild west" with it being surrounded by the Chihuahua Mountains. So yes, they believe this because they have never been here. But even that's no excuse, as a simple check on Geography tells you… [cont.]
